The 2020s- An Era of Scaling New Heights and Treading Uncharted Waters for Women
Finally, the last page of 2010s chapters have been turned over and closed. However, the amazing achievements recorded in this past decade, for and by women will remain as indelible imprints on the sands of time. Among these amazing achievements by women is the world’s latest record and limit breaker, Sanna Marin, 34, who heads a five-woman led coalition government, with four of the women in their early thirties, thereby making her the youngest Prime Minister in the world and in Finnish history.
Among the gains for women in the past decade is the victory over the child marriage battle in Egypt, Tanzania and Indonesia. As a result, the education and futures of the upcoming generation of girls in these countries and this regard, is secure.
Despite the massive gains for and by women, the current global consensus is that real change is painstakingly slow with majority of women and girls across the world still faced with horrifying situations, which further drives a wedge into the barriers that seemingly hold women from taking bold steps as change makers in their generation.
However, this new decade 2020 presents a fresh slate and an unmissable opportunity for all stakeholders to come on board, unite, and collaborate at all levels, from the grassroots to all corridors of power.
Likewise, at the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD), we aim to reel out programs and training sessions designed to present diverse perspectives, insights and strategies that will challenge women at all levels across emerging economies, to tread uncharted waters and scale new heights.
Additionally, we aim to utilise the Amazons Watch Magazine’s platform to cut through and move beyond this disruptive internet age flooded with much noise and proliferated democratic news makers, to actually make news for the unreported and underreported women.
In this new 2020 decade, we aim to make worthy news out of every woman’s glory, story and pain so that as Sheryl Sandberg succinctly put it, we can effectively “raise the floor as well as the ceiling for women” in emerging economies.
Welcome to the brand new 2020 decade.
Mrs. Furo Ken-Giami
